Though in the past Greene Hill members have voted to stay out of specific political debates, we know that our very existence as a co-op is a political stance. Co-operatives are built upon the values of democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. Because of this, it was important for us to show our support for our community during the recent and ongoing protests for Black lives and against police brutality.

When businesses in our neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant were urged to shut down because of the thousands of protesters expected to flood Fulton Street, Co-op board members acted quickly. They set up a care station in front of the store, offering water, masks and snacks to protesters and the use of the store’s bathroom.

We are raising the issue once more about how we can take a stand on important political controversial issues with our membership in order to arrive at a clear new policy. We encourage all to join us at our monthly board meetings to be part of paving that path.
