Summer is here, and there’s no better way to enjoy the warm weather than to grill up some delicious food. There are a lot of possibilities for outdoor grilling meals and sometimes you might need some ideas for ingredients that will impress your guests. Well, the Co-op has an answer for you: the Breukelen Rub spice company supplies a variety of flavorful spice rubs that will elevate any dish and spice up your grilling season.

A Black-owned, Brooklyn-based company, Breukelen Rub is committed to bringing Brooklyn’s best flavors to its customers. Breukelen Rub currently carries four spice mixes, three of them named after Brooklyn neighborhoods. The Brownsville blend has a spicy kick of multiple types of chili peppers, including ghost pepper and Carolina reaper. The East New York blend is a savory mix of mostly guajillo peppers and other warm spices. The Flatbush blend is reflective of the neighborhood’s Caribbean community with a base of a Jamaican jerk seasoning. Last but not least is Abuela’s Adobo, an adobo-based spice blend with a strong garlic flavor. You can get each of these 4 ounce jars at the Co-op for $9.10.

Breukelen Rub’s blends are very versatile; you can add them to punch up the flavor of a variety of meals. In this Easy Peasy Zucchini recipe by member-owner Pam Turczyn, try the Brownsville blend, Flatbush blend or the East New York blend. For the meat eaters out there, Breukelen Rub can also easily elevate your steaks. I recently used the East New York blend to marinate a skirt steak and it came out very spicy and flavorful. No matter where you grill — in your backyard, rooftop or even just marinating a simple meal in a studio apartment — Breukelen Rub will add a great kick to your meal.
